You’ve probably heard of the lipstick effect, whereby a weak economy causes consumers to cut back on non-essentials and spend whatever disposable income they have on small luxuries like lipstick. In 2011 lipstick sales went up 14%. Nail polish sales have risen 54%. (NPD Group)

While it is tempting to go out and buy a new shade, try mixing the colors you already have to see if you can create a new hue.

Here I mixed a light pink (actual name – yogurt) and black polish to create blue.

Up close it’s not exactly manicure-worthy but from afar it does pass for a solid cobalt.
